New sporting route saves Cambridge golf course

UK FootGolf Ltd are the new owners of Milton Golf Course, Cambridge

UK FootGolf Ltd is the new leaseholder of the 38-acre, former pay & play nine-hole golf course and associated premises in Milton, to the north of Cambridge. Carter Jonas acted for Begbies Traynor in the re-assigment of the lease.

Milton Golf Course was in the hands of liquidator, Begbies Traynor upon closing last year still with leasehold interest of 89-years remaining on the site.

Negotiations took place during the autumn with UK FootGolf Ltd becoming the new owners at the year’s end with plans to make the Milton course its East of England headquarters.

Footgolf is the UK’s fastest growing sport and it is played on parallel courses which are complementary to the layout and principles of traditional golf. The object of footgolf is to play a course in as few shots as possible – with special footballs and target holes created for the purpose. It is possible for rounds of golf and footgolf to be played at the same time as courses are complementary and rules oblige players to respect each other’s sport.

The new course at Milton will add to UK FootGolf’s Ltd portfolio of 60 courses across England and Wales which includes a rolling programme of new course openings in 2015, with Milton as an 18-hole footgolf course set to launch in the spring.

Gareth May, head of UK development for the sport’s national governing body – the UK FootGolf Association – said: “To finally see the people of Cambridge given the opportunity to participate in the sport of footgolf locally is very exciting. I live in the county so to see Cambridge selected as the base for the East of England HQ is fantastic news for the region.

“Footgolf is a truly inclusive sport, it can be played by persons of any age or sex, whether it be an individual looking to get in to a new sport, a football club looking to focus on some training elements with players, a company looking for a fun corporate and team building day, or parents and grandparents looking to take the children to play outdoors, all can participate in footgolf.”

Steven Harvey of Carter Jonas’ Cambridge office added: “There was local concern about the loss of sporting and recreational facilities when Milton Golf Course closed last year. In saving it for sporting use, the new owners are investing to breathe new life in to the course with a sporting twist which will widen the audience and enhance the appeal of this valuable amenity.”
