The Legal 500 Guide: Mills & Reeve trio among Corporate & Commercial stars

With a huge number of companies trading globally and a record number of startups coming through the pipeline it is little wonder that Corporate & Commercial law is such a consistently strong suit for the East Anglia region’s major practitioners.

The Legal 500 ranks four firms in Tier 1 for Corporate & Commercial work in Cambridge – listed alphabetically – Birketts, Mills & Reeve, Taylor Vinters and Taylor Wessing.

Mills & Reeve has three leading individuals, Anthony McGurk (pictured), Claire Clarke and Tom Pickthorn while Tier 2-ranked Penningtons Manches has two leading individuals in Helen Drayton and Ross McNaughton.

The Legal 500 notes that in 2017 Mills & Reeve advised on matters involving more than 75 different jurisdictions.

Birketts is stand-alone top in Ipswich with James Austin a leading individual. The firm shares top spot in Norwich with Mills & Reeve. Buckles and Greenwoods GRM share Tier 1 status in Peterborough where Alastair Gunn of Greenwoods and Nigel Moore of Buckles are the only two leading individuals named.

For corporate work elsewhere in East Anglia, Greene & Greene is standalone top with Ashtons Legal sharing a second tier ranking.

If your company gets entangled in a dispute then three firms in Cambridge are tipped as best bets to resolve issues – Birketts, Mills & Reeve and Taylor Vinters.

Human Resources

Employment law is another hot potato, especially with Brexit threatening to put a brake on overseas hires from outside of the EU for talent hungry technology firms. Human Resources is a real area of expertise for the region and six firms are recommended as Tier 1: Birketts, Cambridge Employment Law, Eversheds Sutherland (International), Greenwoods GRM, Mills & Reeve and Taylor Vinters.

In the related field of Immigration law, two firms are handed Tier 1 rankings – Gross & Co in Bury St Edmunds and Mills & Reeve in Norwich.

With nine world-class universities in the region, several of the UK’s top colleges plus some outstanding schools in the public and private sectors, East Anglia boasts a talented cohort of Education law specialists.

The Legal 500 Guide hands four firms a Tier 1 position – Birketts, Eversheds Sutherland, Mills & Reeve and Stone King. Glynne Stanfield of Eversheds is one of three leading individuals. The Legal 500 guide says Stanfield is “a recognised leader in the field of education mergers.”
