Entrepreneur kickstarts beer house revival

Richard Holmes, CEO of The Pint Shop

A UK entrepreneur has turned to Cambridge in a venture designed to revitalise Britain’s ‘bland’ pubs and eateries and revive the heart and soul of the bustling beer houses that packed in the punters in the 1830s.

Richard Holmes, CEO of The Pint Shop, is one of a number of new clients that have turned to Cambridge company My Business FD to help find part-time or interim finance directors – many of them technology-related.

Chris Chapman, managing director of My Business FD, believes The Pint Shop drinking and eating concept could revolutionise the hospitality industry. It is aiming for its initial flagship site to open in Cambridge later this year: It is already in discussion with a prime location in the city.

The Pint Shop’s aim is to create a chain of modern day Beer Houses – “the sort of place that professional folk in their late 20’s through to late 40’s will hang out to eat, drink & chat.”

Richard Holmes said: “Sadly, since the birth of beer houses the pub and brewing scene has become heavily commercialised, dominated by a handful of major corporations. The result is bland beer, bland food, poor service and outdated pubs.

“Not surprisingly this has created major problems in recent times for the pub industry with many closing. It’s time to move things on, and make pubs work again.

“We want to take the spirit of those original beer houses – craft beer, intimacy & fun – throw in some killer comfort food, cooked on a fire, just as it was in 1830 and deliver it with a bunch of amazing folks who love beer and live for food.”

Holmes added: “We approached My Business FD for two main reasons. Firstly, we knew we needed to add senior financial experience to our team that would give extra confidence to funders.

“Secondly we wanted to leverage its great network of early stage investors, especially locally to Cambridge. Chris and the team have already introduced us to some great people and we are in the middle of some very interesting discussions that will hopefully end in us securing the funding we need to kick off the next phase of the project.”

Holmes is an experienced entrepreneur and has already held senior positions with Leon and La Tasca. Chapman said: “He knows this industry well and what it takes to build a successful business. Richard has built an intriguing business concept and we look forward to helping him secure the funding it needs.”
