UKTI to host Japanese trade clinics in Cambridge

UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) East is running a series of clinics to help companies looking to take advantage of business opportunities in Japan.

The free one-to-one clinics are being held at St John’s Innovation Centre in Cambridge on March 17.

The clinics will give businesses the opportunity to speak to two experts in the Japanese market who will be able to answer questions about doing business in the country as well as give an overview of their experience in doing business in Japan and some cultural tips. Attendees will also be able to find out about some live business opportunities currently available to East of England businesses in Japan from sectors including global sports, consumer goods, nuclear, life sciences and technology.

UKTI International Trade Adviser Jose Richart said: “Japan is not a quick-win market, but a long-term one, where you need to build trust and relationships first.

“Japanese companies are very demanding, as they need lots of information about your products or service and require attention to detail and the highest quality. However, once you have gained their trust, they can be very loyal clients for a long time. With a 127 million population it is a huge market with very wealthy consumers. They love British brands, so it is easier for British businesses to start selling in this market.”

Current business opportunities available in Japan include:

  • A company is seeking scientific electronic equipment and devices for a range of applications, specifically a Quantum Cascade Laser, Time of Flight Camera and Hyper (Multi) Spectrum Imaging.
  • A Japanese technology company is seeking UK companies with voice-related technology interested in exporting through a partner into Japan. The company is specifically looking for British companies in the sector of CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) and/or voice-related products & services.
  • UKTI has established an online showcase platform dedicated to promoting British food and drink and invites companies to display their products.
