Taylor Vinters launches second trade mission to Singapore

Struan McDougall, Cambridge Capital Group

A delegation of UK-based tech entrepreneurs will be heading to Singapore in June as part of a trade mission in association with international law firm Taylor Vinters, UKTI and Cambridge Capital Group.

The three-day visit, from June 16 to 18, has been organised by Cambridge Connection – the high-profile sector networking forum founded by Taylor Vinters and leading business organisation Cambridge Capital Group.

Created to ignite key collaboration, partnering and investment opportunities among investors, entrepreneurs, corporates, Government and NGOs from the Cambridge, London and Oxford tech clusters with counterparts in Singapore, Cambridge Connection provides crucial links to generate investment opportunities and strategic partnering across the globe.

Under UKTI’s Market Visit Support programme, eligible companies may apply for financial support that can be used towards the cost of flights plus other expenses on the trip.

The aim of the visit is to connect the UK and Singapore high growth technology and VC investment communities.

This will be the second time the trade mission has taken place. Last year saw entrepreneurs on the delegation finding new investments, signing distribution agreements, meeting potential suppliers and using the networking and pre-arranged meetings to get a deeper understanding of a variety of business opportunities in the Singapore and Asian markets.

The trip will include a reception on Monday June 16 at Eden Hall, the British High Commissioner’s residence in Singapore, which will be hosted by Taylor Vinters and UKTI.  At the reception there will be opportunities to meet members of the investor and entrepreneurial community within the Singapore technology sector. Keynote addresses will inform attendees from the UK about the Singapore technology and investment ecosystem.

On Tuesday June 17 and Wednesday June 18, the delegation will have the opportunity to join pre-arranged meetings with VCs and other representatives from the Singapore technology and investor community including VC/incubators; angels and other wealthy private individuals; UK and Singapore government agencies.

The event has been organised to coincide with the International Communications and IT Exhibition and Conference, CommunicAsia 2014 at Marina Bay Sands, which runs from June 17 to 20.

High-profile partners of the trade mission include UKTI East of England and Singapore, Cambridge Wireless, Red Gate, Cambridge Consultants, IDA and the British Chambers of Commerce.

Patrick Farrant, head of technology at Taylor Vinters said, “One of the key growth areas for us has been supporting clients expanding in Asia with our market entry product which provides the essential elements needed to get started – from advice on structuring and setting up to operational support and building networks.

“The Cambridge Connection event will demonstrate to businesses in the UK the value of opening up into new markets in Asia and becoming part of Singapore’s growing economy.”

Struan McDougall, director of Cambridge Capital Group, a leading business angel group of 40 investors and seed funds, added: “Last year’s trip proved that Singapore is clearly a potential launching pad for European tech firms seeking to enter the South East Asian markets.

“Delegates connected with leading investors, entrepreneurs, potential business partners and government representatives seeking opportunities and partnerships in the UK and Europe.”
